Consul Generals discuss developments and initiatives in Kurdistan

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (DFR.krg.org) – The Head of KRG’s Department of Foreign Relations, Minister Falah Mustafa, on Tuesday, 13 March, received both the British and French diplomats to the Region in separate meetings to discuss recent political developments in Kurdistan, Iraq and the wider region, as well as their ongoing efforts in the Region.

Addressing the importance of their missions in the Region, Minister Mustafa said “Kurdistan has come a long way since your arrival here. You have helped us to develop opportunities in our cultural, educational and economic sectors. We appreciate your continued support and collaboration with our government, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our cooperation and exploring new areas of mutual interest.”

Accompanied in his meeting by the Head of the Northern Gulf Department at the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Mr Ken O’Flaherty, the British Consul General, Mr Chris Bowers, highlighted that since the Erbil Trade Fair last October, more than 100 British companies have visited the Region. He also mentioned that there have been several visits by UK universities to seek out methods for increasing collaborative efforts with local universities as well.

Mr Bowers announced that the British Minister of State for Universities and Science, Rt Hon David Willetts MP, will be leading a delegation of 10 Vice Chancellors to Kurdistan next month in order to explore ways of further strengthening educational ties.

In a separate meeting with the French Consul General, Dr Frédéric Tissot, both sides discussed the political situation in Iraq and the ongoing crisis in Syria, as well as the upcoming Arab summit and the Iraqi national conference.

They also talked about the activities of the “Danielle Mitterrand” International MLF French School and Kindergarten in Erbil and Suleimaniah, with Dr Tissot stressing that one of the main initiatives of the French government is to help improve the quality of education in Kurdistan.

Minister Mustafa said, “Enhancing our academic programs in the Kurdistan Region is one of the KRG’s top priorities. We welcome all initiatives from our partners in the international community to improve the quality of education for our students—from sharing international knowledge and expertise to providing unique cultural experiences.”

The International MLF French Schools were opened in 2009 and were named after Ms Danielle Mitterrand. Hailed as “The mother of the Kurds,” Ms Mitterrand was the wife of former French President Francois Mitterrand and a long time supporter of Kurdish rights. She was the founder and president of the French Libertés Foundation until her death on the 22nd of November last year. The Libertés Foundation had a long history of promoting the Kurdish cause abroad.




Head of DFR, Minister Falah Mustafa receives Turkish Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – Head of KRG Department of Foreign Relations, Minister Falah Mustafa received a high-level Turkish delegation led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sedat Önal on 13th March 2019 and discussed bilateral developments and manifold of issues including Erbil-Baghdad ties and the process of  forming a new KRG cabinet.

 
New Korean Consul General assumes office in the Kurdistan Region

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – Head of KRG Department of Foreign Relations, Minister Falah Mustafa received the newly appointed Consul General of the Republic of Korea to the Kurdistan Region, CHOI Kwang Jin on 10th March 2019.

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – The new Consul General of the Russian Federation to the Kurdistan Region, Oleg Levin visited the KRG Department of Foreign Relations and were received by the Head of DFR, Minister Falah Mustafa on the occasion of his appointment of office in Erbil on 10th March 2019.

KRG UK Representation and KMP launch Kurdistan Memory Programme and Commemorate the Kurdish Genocides and chemical attack on Halabja at BAFTA

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) at the heart of London’s West End became home to the launching of the Kurdistan Memory Programme (KMP) and screening of the UK premiere documentary film ‘One Yazidi Family vs. ISIS’, directed and produced by Gwynne Roberts following its debut screening at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.


A delegation from the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS) visits DFR
