Joint Conference held to provide guidelines to local, national, and international observers for the upcoming Elections of the Iraqi Council of Representatives

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) held on 3rd May 2018, in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Relations, a conference to review guidelines of local, national, and international observers for the upcoming Iraqi Elections to cover operational issues such as security, communication systems and electoral facilities.

At the beginning of the conference, Mr. Saed Kakei, a Kurdish Member of the Board of the Election Body Commissioners, highlighted the importance of elections in the process of democracy and the participation of wide range of observers along with the political parties, media outlets, institutions, and civil society organizations. He also expressed his gratitude and appreciation to all the diplomatic representatives and international organizations who have registered to participate in monitoring of the electoral process, while inviting other missions and organizations that had not yet registered.

Minister Falah Mustafa, the Head of the Department of Foreign Relations of KRG, welcomed the IHEC and the attendees, including Diplomatic Corps and NGO Representatives. He said “Election monitoring activities are an important aspect in promoting the principle of democracy and gives confidence in the existence of free and fair elections around the world”. “Election monitoring is also a significant mechanism to ensure accountability and quality in the electoral process” he added.

 

“It’s our pleasure to welcome the diplomatic missions and international organizations, working in the Kurdistan Region, to participate in the process of monitoring the upcoming Iraqi elections” he also added.

Minister Mustafa touched upon the readiness of the Foreign Relations Department for cooperation with the Ministry of Interior and the IHEC in Iraq, to facilitate a successful election process.

On his side, the Head of the Electoral Commission of Kurdistan Region Section, Mr. Mazin Abdulqadir, delivered a speech in guiding observers and the international monitors in this process, expressing the readiness of Erbil office team for cooperation and coordination in registration of international teams of observers and their participation in the process of the electoral process.

Parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place on May 12th, 2018.

Italian Consulate Celebrates its National Day in Erbil

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – Minister Falah Mustafa, Head of the Department of Foreign Relations of Kurdistan Regional Government, on Sun 13, May 2018, participated in the celebration of the Italian National Day; “Festa della Republica” along with Dr. Fuad Hussein, Chief of Staff to the Kurdistan Region Presidency, Mr. Safeen Dizayee, (KRG) spokesperson, on behalf of the Prime Minister Barzani, Mr. Karim Sinjari, the Minister of Interior and acting Minister of Peshmerga of KRG. Mr. Bruno Pasquino the Ambassador of Italy to Iraq and Ms. Serena Muroni, Italian consul in Erbil were present to host the guests. The reception was also attended by number of KRG Officials, diplomats, and foreign representatives.
