Special conference on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict held in Erbil

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, a special conference was held on Monday 25, June 2018, supervised by Pakhshan Zangana, Security General of KRG High Council of Women Affairs with the cooperation of the United Nation Agencies.

The conference was attended by H.E. Mahmud Haji Salih, Minister of Anfal and Martyrs Affairs and Head of the High Committee of Genocide Recognition for Yezidis and other components, Siham Mamand, Assistant Head of DFR along with high-level international officials, local and International agencies and organizations, members of parliament and representatives of relevant ministries.

The introductory speech was presented by the Security General of KRG High Council of Women Affairs, who welcomed the guests and defined the 19th of June as the United Nations International Day against Sexual Violence during conflicts. She also addressed the crimes of terrorist groups against women, girls and children, stressing the plight of children born as a result of wartime rape and reported that the Federal Government did not support KRG enough to take the neccesary measures in addressing these issues and allocation of a special budget to this regard.

Minister of Anfal and Martyrs Affairs, H.E. Mahmud Haji Salih, requested for the UN Security Council resolutions to prosecute criminals in the light of the Supreme Committee's procedures and to define the crimes against the Yezid Kurds and other ethnic and religious components as acts of genocide.

During the course of the conference, Siham Mamand, Assistant Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations on behalf of the DFR gave her remarks on the topic of discussion and said “Sexual violence in times of conflict is a crucial issue which each and every one of us is responsible for addressing”. “Our objective as KRG is to address the factors that lead to the rise of sexual violence, from the root and in a sustainable manner “ she added.

The Assistant Head of DFR also emphasized that the Department of Foreign Relations stands ready to take on the task and believe in the power of local and global organizations collaboration to achieve inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous societies in this mission.

She concluded with reassuring the attendees that the KRG remains committed and determined to empower women to ensure their participation in positively shaping all aspects of society as well as taken significant measures to consider violence against women in general and after the arrival of millions of IDPs and Refugees.

Kurdo Omar Abdulla, Director of the General Directorate to Trace Violence against Women and UNFPA representative in Iraq also gave a statement stressing their work.

At the end of the conference, a special session was held on the themes of the conference to combat sexual violence during conflicts, after which the audience were given the opportunity to express their views on the subject.

 




Head of DFR meets with Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs delegation

The two sides discussed the latest Kurdistan Region and Iraq political developments, updated on post-KRG parliamentary elections, the formation of the Erbil and Baghdad governments and Erbil-Baghdad relations.
