KRG UK Representation holds its Summer Reception at the UK Parliament

London, United Kingdom (uk.gov.krd) – The Kurdistan Regional Government Representation in the United Kingdom held its summer reception in the idyllic setting of Terrace Pavilion at the UK House of Parliament.

The Chairman of All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Kurdistan Region Mr Jack Lopresti MP, whom hosted the reception stated “the Kurdistan rights in Iraq should be copper-fasten by the Constitution and not be given or taken by the whim of anybody, we also urge the Kurds to be united but to adopt robust pragmatism in any dealings with Baghdad. The Kurdistan Region has a huge amount of potential; it is the bridge between Europe, Turkey and Iraq. It could again be a magnet for investment and through that to the wider market in Iraq. Erbil and Duhok could be the base for those reconstructing Mosul and the Kurds should make that country much fit whatever history holds for them through a thorough reform of their economy and their politics.”

The reception was also addressed by the Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP, Minister of State for International Development and Minister of State for the Middle East at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. The Minister said: “Iraqi Kurds have been close and dependable allies in this fight and faced down a barbaric assault on their cultural identity and a way of life and in particular we must recognise and pay tribute to the courage of Peshmerga who suffered heavy losses but performed with great courage in the fight against Daesh.”

Minister Burt also stated that “Our priorities at this pivotal moment are firstly to ensure the swift formation of a stable and an inclusive government in Iraq, secondly to work with all parties to ensure the relationship between Baghdad and Erbil is paced on a sustainable footing and thirdly to build Iraq in which all the Iraqis of all ethnicities and religion have the security, jobs and opportunities that they want and deserve. We will continue to work with Iraqi Kurds and with Baghdad to ensure the formation of an effective and inclusive government   that addresses the need and hopes of all the Iraqi citizens. You stood with us for a long time and I hope to stand with you for a long time to come”, the Minister added.

The Kurdistan Regional Government High Representative to the United Kingdom, H.E. Karwan Jamal Tahir regarded the great turnout of the reception as a sign and testament of the enduring and enhanced relationship between the UK and the Kurdistan Region. Mr Tahir said: “We hold this summer reception at a time when Iraq has survived ISIS. It is almost a year since ISIS was largely defeated on the ground by the federal Iraq’s security forces and Region’s Peshmerga forces. But this victory would not have been possible without the international community's support including Britain which has been providing military support for all the forces, including the Peshmerga.” He also added that “We are now awaiting an inclusive government that will embrace and serves the interest of all.”

On the economic front, Representative Tahir encouraged the trade and investment organisations to revive the economic ties with the Kurdistan Region after a long pause due to the heavy challenges that the Region had to endure, and reassured the stakeholders that the Kurdistan Region continues to be a source of stability as one of the KRG’s top priority is to provide a safe and secure environment where business and investment can flourish.

Minister Nadhim Zahawi, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families also welcomed the guests and said “it is a privilege to be here with you and is wonderful to see the representatives from the Iraqi Embassy and the High Representative of the Kurdistan Region working together and I hope that the progress between the Prime Minister Abadi and the Prime Minister Barazani will  mean that the bridges that will be build this time around are far stronger and are there for the good of Kurdistan and the whole of Iraq.
The speeches were concluded by remarks from H.E. Nazar Mirjan, Deputy Ambassador of the Iraqi Embassy in the UK. H.E. Nazar stated that “the partnership with Kurdistan Region of Iraq was a history of cooperation that goes back to fighting dictatorship and toppling Saddam’s regime and then writing the Constitution for the new democratic Iraq after 2003. Reinstating state institutions and representing the Kurds in political, social and administrative system in Iraq will lay the foundation for a federal state based on equality among its people. Together with the Kurdistan Regional Government we will build a strong, federal and democratic Iraq for the prosperity and the development of all Iraqis.”

The reception was attended by senior UK government officials, parliamentarians, Lords, members of diplomatic corps , media, academia, cultural organisations, the Kurdish and Iraqi communities along with leading stakeholders from industries gathered to reinforce the bilateral  ties between the UK and the Kurdistan Region in key common areas of interest.
