Netherlands Consulate General celebrates the birthday of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander in Erbil

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq ( – Minister Falah Mustafa on 27 April gave a speech at a reception marking the birthday of H.M. Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands. The celebration was organized by the Netherlands Consulate General in Erbil and Embassy in Baghdad.

Minister Mustafa, the Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, on behalf of the KRG congratulated the people and government of the Netherlands on King’s Day. He thank the government of the Netherlands for their continuous support to the Kurdistan Region during difficult times.

Minister Mustafa said that the Netherlands has been a key partner in providing humanitarian support to IDPs displaced by ISIS in recent years, and in training Peshmerga Forces. He said, “We are grateful and encouraged to have military advisors from the Netherlands as part of the US-led push forward the reform process of the Ministry of Peshmerga”.


The Minister further said that bilateral ties can be made stronger through more exchange programs for youth, university students and women’s empowerment, to take advantage of Holland’s excellent education system.

The Head of Foreign Relations commended public-private sector economic cooperation, in particular, the agriculture conferences that have been held in Kurdistan Region and the Netherlands. Kurdistan remains committed to furthering the positive relationship with the Netherlands at all levels.

Mr. Willem Nicolaas Cosijn, the Dutch Consul-General to Erbil, in his speech said that the celebration in Erbil, bringing together Kurdistan and the Netherlands, was a symbol of their partnership. He said, “The sun is shining over the Kurdistan Region. This is a time of healing, of reconstruction, of hope and of progress”.

He also paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives and their families who lost loved ones in the war against ISISو and commended the Peshmerga forces for their bravery.

Mr. Cosijn said, “The Netherlands is committed to supporting Kurdistan Region as it enters a new phase, and has much willingness to deepen the roots of bilateral partnership and working together in various areas, especially in the framework of the international alliance for the reform process in the security sector, while at the same time continuing to assist Kurdistan through providing humanitarian assistance to refugees and displaced persons, developing and rehabilitating the agricultural sector and food security”.

KRG Statement on developments in Northeastern Syria

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – The Kurdistan Regional Government is deeply concerned by the United States’ decision to withdraw from the safe zone in northeastern Syria and by reports of a potential unilateral military operation by Turkey. The government calls on Turkey, as a member of the Global Coalition, to avoid any initiative that would undermine the progress made against ISIS, including jeopardising the secure detention of terrorist fighters.
