Minister Falah Mustafa receives incoming Swiss Ambassador Lukas Gasser and his delegation

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq ( – Minister Falah Mustafa received Ambassador Lukas Gasser, Switzerland’s ambassador to Iraq, resident in Amman, and his accompanying delegation on his first visit to the Kurdistan Region.

Minister Mustafa, Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations (DFR) congratulated Ambassador Gasser on his posting and wished him success in performing his duties.

The Minister said that the DFR stands ready to support Switzerland’s programs and activities in the Region and beyond, and to further their bilateral cooperation in many areas.

He gave a brief on the history of the KRG’s experience of governance, Erbil-Baghdad ties, the needs of refugees and IDPs, recent political developments in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, developments since the formation of the new Iraqi federal government, and the efforts to form the 9th KRG cabinet.

The Minister also touched on the new KRG  cabinet’s priorities and said that the KRG wants Switzerland and the international community to share their expertise in strengthening federal institutions, with respect for cultural identity, peaceful coexistence and capacity building of women and youth.

Ambassador Gasser congratulated the President-elect of the Kurdistan Region, Mr. Nechirvan Barzani. He said that he came to look more closely at current developments in Kurdistan and the wider region, and to discuss opportunities for joint cooperation and common concerns with the Kurdistan Region.

The delegation included Mr. Hans-Peter Lenz, Head of Crisis Management Center,; Mr. Urs von Arb, Delegate for the Middle East, Swiss State Secretariat for Migration; Mr. Simon Ammann, Regional Coordinator MENA, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs; and Ms. Johanna Weidtmann, Political Analyst at the Embassy of Switzerland in Amman. Ms. Siham Mamand, the Assistant Head of the DFR, also attended the meeting.

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq ( – Minister Safeen Dizayee, Head of Kurdistan’s Department of Foreign Relations on 30 September made a speech at the celebration in Erbil for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. He attended the Chinese Consulate General’s reception together with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, and Mr. Ni-Ruchi, the Chinese Consul General in Erbil.

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – The Kurdistan Regional Government is deeply concerned by the United States’ decision to withdraw from the safe zone in northeastern Syria and by reports of a potential unilateral military operation by Turkey. The government calls on Turkey, as a member of the Global Coalition, to avoid any initiative that would undermine the progress made against ISIS, including jeopardising the secure detention of terrorist fighters.
