Minister Falah Mustafa and Ms. Ita Schuette, new UNHCR Coordinator discuss humanitarian situation for IDPS and refugees

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – Minister Falah Mustafa met on Sunday with Ms. Ita Schuette, the new United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Coordinator for Kurdistan Region, along with Mr. Ayman Gharaibeh, UNHCR Representative in Iraq.

Minister Mustafa, Head of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG DFR), congratulated Ms. Schuette on her posting, wished her success in her duties, and assured her of the DFR’s full support to all United Nations agencies in the Region.

He stressed the importance of joint work between the KRG and UN agencies at many levels.

Minister Mustafa and Ms. Schuette discussed the humanitarian situation facing refugees and IDPs and the importance of providing more services and helping them to return to their homes.

The UNHCR delegation greatly commended the KRG’s welcome of over 1.2 million internally displaced persons, and the KRG’s safeguarding of the rights of different ethnic and religious communities, even during the many crises that Kurdistan faced in recent years.

Ms. Siham Mamand, the Assistant Head of DFR, also participated in the meeting.
