Head of DFR Minister Safeen Dizayee holds virtual meeting with MP Tobias Ellwood, Chair of UK Parliament’s Defence Select Committee

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (DFR.GOV.KRD) – Minister Safeen Dizayee, the Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Department of Foreign Relations (DFR - KRG) on 11th June held a virtual video meeting with the Rt. Hon. Tobias Ellwood MP, chair of the UK Parliament’s Defence Select Committee.

At the video meeting, also attended by KRG Representative to the UK Mr Karwan Jamal, Minister Dizayee gave an overview of the latest political, security, economic and public health developments in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, the KRG’s measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, and the KRG’s practical needs to battle the virus.

Minister Dizayee and Mr Ellwood also discussed Erbil-Baghdad relations and Kurdistan’s policy on how to resolve the outstanding issues.

They stressed the importance of continued international coalition support for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, to combat ISIS and maintain the security and stability of the region.

Minister Dizayee appreciated the effective role of the UK and Mr Ellwood as a good friend of the Kurdish people, now and also in his previous positions as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and at the Ministry of Defence.

Mr. Ellwood was positive about Kurdistan’s good relations with the UK, and hoped that they will be strengthened at all levels. He said that after the COVID19 pandemic, the UK Parliament’s Defence Select Committee hopes to visit Kurdistan Region to learn more about the situation.
