Minister Falah Mustafa: Kurdish unity in Syria is of paramount importance

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq - (DFR.krg.org) – The Swedish Special Envoy to the Syrian Opposition, Ambassador Jan Thesleff, met with Minister Falah Mustafa today to share and exchange thoughts on the ongoing crises in Syria.

Ambassador Thesleff was appointed by the Swedish Government almost a year ago to spearhead discussions with the Syrian National Council. This is his first visit to the Kurdistan Region.

Speaking about ongoing talks in foreign capitals, Ambassador Thesleff said his government and the international community were following the events closely. He also said that the regime in Syria ‘thrives on divisions’ amongst the opposition.

During his visit he also visited the Domiz refugee camp set up in Duhok Governorate for those fleeing the violence in Syria. Commenting on the services being provided by the KRG, he said: “The visit allowed me to see firsthand the excellent arrangements that you are making for the Syrian refugees.”

Latest figures suggest there are over 500 refugees arriving on daily basis.

Minister Mustafa stressed on the importance of sharing the experience of the Kurds in Iraq with the Syrian National Council and those representing the Kurdish communities, pressuring the international community for more meaningful engagement, and in providing assistance to the refugees taking shelter in Kurdistan.

“We have tried to share our own experiences with the Syrian opposition, including a cohesive vision for the future,” said Minister Mustafa.

He added that the removal of the previous regime in Iraq is a living example of what could happen to the regime in Syria. He said, “We want to a see a democratic and representative government in Damascus, and the opposition must take into consideration the recognition, rights and future of all the minority groups.”

The two sides exchanged thoughts and ideas about how the international community could further engage in the process, and on bilateral ties between Sweden and Kurdistan.

The meeting was attended by Ms Louise Calais, Head of the Swedish Embassy Office in Erbil, and Miss Siham Mamand, Assistant Head of DFR.
