UNHCR organizes workshop on “enhancing the protection space for refugees and asylum seekers in the Kurdistan Region”

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (dfr.gov.krd) – United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to Iraq in collaboration with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations (DFR)  concluded a one  workshop on “enhancing the protection space for refugees and asylum seekers in the Kurdistan Region” on Thursday, February 7, 2019.

Staff members participate in the workshop, which focused on improving coordination between the UNHCR and KRG relevant institutions of the Judicial Council, Ministry of Justice and Interior for further strengthening collaboration and expanding the protection space for refugees and asylum seekers in the Kurdistan Region. In addition to exchange views on protecting displaced persons and mechanisms of the international and national laws according to the international agreement.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Bruno Geddo, UNHCR Representative to Iraq delivered the welcoming address and thanked KRG for their harmonizing with the UNHCR especially the Foreign Relations Department for arranging this workshop. He also emphasized on highlighted the situations of refugees and IDPs in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq denote to improvements in living conditions and the protection of their rights.

UNHCR Representative, Geddo expressed his appreciation to the KRG institutions for their continued support and assistance to the displaced persons regardless of the hardness they faced with the economic crisis and military interventions over the past years. He also stressed the importance of working together and joint efforts of all parties to overcome the difficulties of the internally displaced persons and Syrian refugees in the region and beyond.

In his remark, Minister Falah Mustafa thanked UNHCR for organizing the workshop and hoped to see continued cooperation. He underlined the significance of mutual cooperation in finding the appropriate approach to the outstanding issues and making an effective solution to the problems as well as promoting an efficient mechanism for the implementation.

Minister reaffirmed KRG’scommitment in respect of the domestic and international legal measures to address the issues and problems of asylum seekers and to secure the rights and basic needs of refugees in the Kurdistan Region. He also stated that the Kurdistan Region has always been a safe haven in a warm embrace for IDPs, refugees and different components for its security and political situation despite the difficult times of facing economic crises and fighting against ISIS terrorists.

In conclusion, Minister Mustafa expressed his prospect that this workshop becomes an opportunity to gain a better understanding and the common cooperation among the sides.

The workshop ended with the distribution of certificates to the participants.
